Welcome to Field Notes

We talk about design a lot at work. Our work. Other people’s work. A small interaction. An animation someone made. A useful tool. Something we don’t understand. Something that’s just cool.

Sometimes we get deep into it. Other times it’s a passing comment. Either way, we forget most of it. Field Notes is our place to write some of it down.

Writing helps us learn

We move quickly and don’t always make time to look back. Writing forces us to slow down, remember what happened, and figure out what we actually think about it. The decisions that mattered. The things that didn’t work. The parts we would do differently now.

So we’re starting a blog. In 2026.

Josh Puckett recently wrote something that resonated: writing is thinking. We think so too.

What we’ll write about

Some posts will barely be posts. A demo, an animation, or one detail we think is worth sharing. Others will be ridiculously long and get deep into how something came together.

The long ones probably won’t do well because people don’t read much anymore. That’s okay. We aren’t doing this to hit a publishing goal. If writing something helps us understand it better, it was worth doing.

We’ll write about things we make at Lightspark. We’ll write about things other people made too. We’ll try to be honest about the hard and messy parts. This isn’t going to be a place where we just flex and market our own stuff.

There is already more than enough to read. If we’re going to add to it, we should take our time and make it worth reading.

We know almost no one does this anymore, but we think it’s worth trying to revive the classic blog. So we made commenting really easy, which was either optimistic or stupid. Please be cool.

We don’t know how often we’ll publish. We’ll write when we have something we care enough to write down. Writing it down helps us. Maybe it’ll help you too.
