What we learn from a visit
We use simple web analytics to understand what people read and how the site is working, so we can improve our posts and Field Notes over time. Like most websites, the analytics tools and our hosting provider receive basic technical information such as your IP address, browser or device, referring page, pages viewed and interactions with the site. They may use cookies or similar technology to do that.
We use this information to improve Field Notes, operate the site and keep it safe. We don’t sell the information you put in comments.
If you comment
Your comment, name, avatar and timestamp are public. They can be linked, quoted, indexed or screenshotted, so don’t put anything private or confidential there.
We store what you submit, along with a salted hash of your IP address to slow spam and abuse. Your browser also remembers your name, avatar, drafts and the private proofs that let you update or delete a recent comment. Clearing your site data clears those local details; it does not remove a published comment.
Vercel hosts Field Notes and Supabase stores the comments. If a social avatar appears, the viewer’s browser also asks Unavatar for that public image. These services handle data under their own policies.
A few rules
Your words and images remain yours. You give Lightspark permission to host, format, display, preserve and moderate what you post. Only share things you have the right to share.
Disagreement and salty language are fine. Harassment, hate, threats, impersonation, spam, illegal material and deliberate attempts to wreck the site or the conversation are not. We may refuse or remove comments and close a thread.
We’re experimenting with something here: conversation without accounts, verified identities or much friction. The browser that posts a regular comment can update its displayed identity or delete it for 24 hours. We hope people respect the looseness so we don’t have to lock it down—or shut it down—because a few people can’t be cool. Removing one takes it out of the live thread, though copies may remain in backups, caches or screenshots.
