If we’re going to start a blog in 2026, we may as well fully commit to the bit. So yes, Field Notes has an RSS feed.
If you’ve never used RSS, it’s a way to follow websites in one app. When a site publishes something, it shows up in your reader.
The appeal was pretty simple. You didn’t have to subscribe to some badly formatted email, remember which sites to check, or wade through an algorithm and a bunch of ads just to read something. It was just a pretty clean way to read stuff on the internet.

We tried
We spent more time than expected trying RSS apps and looking for good feeds.
Our honest verdict: Reeder is okay. Actually, it’s pretty good. It’s quiet, thoughtfully made, and gets out of the way.
The harder part is finding things you actually want to read.
A lot of the designers we follow write great stuff, but don’t publish accessible feeds. We couldn’t find public ones for Benji Taylor or Rasmus Andersson, whose archive of writing is excellent. Brian Lovin has a feed, but we couldn’t get it to work in Reeder.
And those are only a few examples. There are dozens more people we follow on X or elsewhere whose writing we’d happily subscribe to in an RSS reader. You can still keep up with them, but scrolling a social feed is a completely different way to read.
There may be workarounds. We didn’t go that far.
At some point, you realize you’re spending more time assembling the reading experience than reading. RSS is still an incredibly clean and pure way to read things on the internet. The problem is that it’s also kind of dead, and a lot of the people we want to read have moved on without it.

Kottke has been collecting the best and strangest parts of the internet since 1998. Not a design blog. Just a good feed.
Ink & Switch
Ink & Switch is a research lab exploring what computers could be. Their work sits somewhere between design, engineering, and rethinking the basic assumptions of software.
So, is RSS back?
No. At least it doesn’t feel like it.
We’ll keep publishing a feed because it’s open, simple, and appropriate for a blog. But this isn’t us predicting a comeback. It’s a technology the web has moved on from, kept alive by a small group of people who still care about it.
